Why do major appliances always break on the weekends?? Especially say, hypothetically, perhaps....uh.....water heaters?

Our water heater (which, it so happened, was also our heater heater) would always break in the middle of the night. We had service calls at quarter past 11 on the coldest frickin' day of the year. Figures.
I'm pretty sure that major appliances have some sort of sensor that tells them when to break - what time of day or year, or when we have NO cushion in the checking account...
